Audi adds ChatGPT to its voice assistant
Audi is improving the in-car voice control capabilities of current and future models by adding ChatGPT integration via the Microsoft Azure OpenAI service.
The German company announced the integration of ChatGPT into the infotainment system starting next month.
Owners of about two million cars manufactured by the German company since 2021 will receive ChatGPT, if the cars are equipped with the standard third-generation MIB 3 infotainment system.
New vehicles, such as the Q6 e-tron, and future models will receive ChatGPT as an addition to the car’s voice assistant.
Audi says the basis of the new feature is Cerence’s Chat Pro solution, which is the result of the company’s partnership with Microsoft in January 2024.
Audi drivers can use enhanced voice control to operate the infotainment, navigation and air conditioning systems as before, with the ability to ask general knowledge questions and get a response from ChatGPT.
The brand says that the ability to request information using natural language makes driving safe as we no longer have to take our eyes off the road at any point.
The Audi assistant redirects inquiries to ChatGPT when it cannot answer them itself.
The overall experience is seamless thanks to the integration with Audi Assistant.
In order to ensure privacy, all questions and answers after processing are deleted from the car, and ChatGPT never has access to any car data.
OpenAI can store your queries itself, and Audi promises in the future you’ll be able to ask questions about the car, for example the correct tire pressure.
“By seamlessly integrating the ChatGPT AI chatbot into voice control, we combine the strengths of both applications,” said Markus Keith, Vice President Interior Design, Infotainment and Connectivity Development at Audi. In addition to a range of voice control functions, our customers now benefit from simple and secure access to AI-based knowledge. “This is the next step towards the best-in-class cabin experience in Audi cars.”
